SAM MATTIS HAS THROWN A MASSIVE 67.45M IN THE DISCUS THROW!
Text below was taken from the description of the youtube video uploaded.
“Today was Sam’s 22nd birthday, what a way to celebrate. I did not get the 67.45M toss but got this 67.20.
On a typical terrible 43 degree and snowy day in Philly, with no wind he manages to sail three tosses well past the Olympic A standard. Last week’s modest 195 foot opener was due to an injured throwing hand. However he was gratified by the positions he hit and was excited for this weekend, given that his hand healed in time. When I saw the weather forecast i told him to temper his expectations. I would have been happy with any throw around 200 feet.
In this meet 4 years earlier, his freshman year, he shattered the U Penn discus record on his very first throw. He did the same this year but achieved so much more:
1. #1 Discus throw in the world
2. # 4 and 5 throws in NCAA history
3. # 1 US thrower
4. Ivy league record
5. Officially Qualified for the Rio Olympics with a throw that surpasses the Olympic A standard
Today his toss of 221’3” was something that he has approached in practices last year and this year. However, he was hampered by work/internship responsibilities and school obligations..
There is still a lot of work to do to clean up his technique. However, these are very encouraging results. I would love to know if anyone has thrown over 220 feet in 43 degree temperatures any where. Worth researching. “
This throw now puts Sam Mattis in the lead for the furthest Discus Throw this year so far.
The top 8 throws in the world can be seen below, while the list is not updated yet to represent Sam’s distance thrown. He is leading by almost 2 metres.
