Stephen Mozia is Nigeria’s number one shot putter and is beginning to receive world recognition for his performances. These include throws that could launch him into the final of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Mozia recently threw 21.03m to set a new national record in the Shot Put. Along with this he also had a 22m+ foul. We recently got the chance to ask Stephen a few questions regarding his training.
Q. How are you feeling about the upcoming indoor world championships?
A. I feel like I’m definitely a contender. But I am approaching it as just another meet. The main goal for the year is to make the Olympic Final and that will remain my focus.
Q.What has been the biggest difference in your training that has made you go from struggling to hit 19m to throwing 21?
A. Just being out of engineering school. I am able to eat better and sleep on a consistent schedule. I’m also not as mentally exhausted or stressed. My training has pretty much been consistent. I’ve been eating more and taking care of my body better. But nothing really extreme.
Q. How important is underweight / overweight implements in your training program?
A. Not extremely. I mainly stick with 16lb. I drill a whole bunch with medballs. But as for throwing I might pick up an 18lb for some heavy stands every once in a while.
Q. Favourite exercise for the shot put?
A. Definitely tire flips. Theyre fun and you feel very explosive after.
