There is some very interesting points to note here. For the athletes with registered marks at an U20 level their is some fairly big disparity. For the 65m+ throwers the 1.75kg distance varied from Philip Milanov at 54m to Mykyta Nesterenko who holds the Under 20 world record which stands at 70m. This 16m range is filled out by many others throwers however in the end these athletes come out with PB’s within a couple of metres of each other with the 2kg. This discus development after the junior ranks is fairly interesting and training load through a junior career would be interesting to note for athletes at each spectrum. Was it training load that pushed athletes early? or is it natural development that leads to an earlier peak meaning they improve more rapidly whilst younger and then progression stops? Some interesting discussion topics to address in future posts.
